How to access treatment

Who can prescribe, how the prescription works, and what happens at the pharmacy.

Medical cannabis in the Czech Republic is a prescription-only medicine. There is no way to buy it legally without a prescription, and Motagon cannot supply you directly.

  1. Talk to your doctor

Your treating doctor decides whether medical cannabis is appropriate for your condition. Since 1 April 2025, general practitioners with specialities 001 and 002 have been able to prescribe it for chronic intractable pain, so for many patients the conversation can start with their own GP rather than a specialist.

It helps to arrive able to describe how long you have had the pain, how it limits what you can do, what you have already tried, and what your other medicines are.

  2. Your doctor writes an electronic prescription

Medical cannabis is prescribed on eRecept as a narcotic prescription. It specifies the product, the quantity in grams and how it should be taken.

  3. The pharmacy dispenses

Pharmacies either hold stock or order it in. Motagon supplies pharmacies through the wholesaler PHARMOS.

  4. Review with your doctor

Expect a review after two to four weeks, then every two to three months. Your doctor will want to know about pain, function, sleep and any side effects.

Cost and reimbursement

Public health insurance covers 90% of the price for up to 30 g of flower per month (10 g of extract). A single prescription may cover up to three months of treatment, so up to 90 g of flower per prescription is reimbursed. Larger quantities need the insurer’s approval. Your doctor and pharmacist can explain what applies in your case.

Driving

Do not drive for approximately six to eight hours after taking medical cannabis, and do not drive at all if you still do not feel well. If you drive for work or operate machinery, tell your doctor before you start.
