Patient FAQ
Straight answers to what we are asked most often.
Can I buy medical cannabis directly from Motagon?
No. Motagon supplies pharmacies and wholesalers. Medical cannabis is a prescription-only medicine and is dispensed by pharmacies against a prescription.
Which doctor can prescribe it?
Since 1 April 2025, general practitioners (family doctors) with specialities 001 and 002 may prescribe medical cannabis for chronic intractable pain. A range of specialists may also prescribe. Start with your treating doctor.
If your doctor is not yet registered to prescribe medical cannabis, they can apply for access through SÚKL’s online form (our registration guide explains the steps), or they can contact Motagon at motagon@motagon.eu and we will walk them through it.
How do I find a pharmacy?
Use our pharmacy finder. Most pharmacies can order medical cannabis even if they do not hold stock, so it is always worth asking.
Is it covered by health insurance?
Largely. Public health insurance covers 90% of the price for up to 30 g of flower per month (10 g of extract). A single prescription may cover up to three months, so up to 90 g of flower per prescription is reimbursed. Your doctor and pharmacist can explain what applies to you.
Can I drive?
Do not drive for approximately six to eight hours after taking medical cannabis, and not at all if you still do not feel well. If you drive for work or operate machinery, tell your doctor before you start.
Can children be prescribed medical cannabis?
Only in narrow circumstances. Patients under 18 are a special case: for them, medical cannabis may be prescribed only by a doctor with specialist competence in palliative medicine, or by a doctor treating the patient in a centre for highly specialised paediatric oncology or haemato-oncology. The listed indications otherwise apply to patients from 18 years of age.
Can I travel abroad with it?
Rules differ from country to country, and crossing borders with cannabis can be difficult even for registered patients. Check the rules of your destination well in advance and speak to your doctor.
My pharmacy says the product is unavailable. What now?
Ask your pharmacy to contact us or their wholesaler. Availability changes as batches are released.
Is Motagon cannabis irradiated?
Some of it. Irradiation is a decontamination step used to meet microbiological safety limits. Products under our own Mota® brand have not been irradiated to date; some products we distribute from other producers are. Your pharmacist can tell you which applies to the product you have been prescribed. More on irradiation.
